The Million Dollar Road Trip NT will entice more local and interstate travellers to the Territory – which means more support for local businesses and work opportunities for Territorians – by offering self-drive travellers who visit and explore the NT between May to September 2024 a chance to win $1 million cash from the Caravan Industry Association of Australia (CIAA). 

Self-drive travellers who stay at participating caravan parks in the NT, visit a local NT Visitor Information Centre in Darwin or Katherine, or make a purchase with a participating tourism experience or attraction in the Territory, will have the chance to win the major prize of $1 million cash, or runner up prizes including $10,000 cash plus a $500 fuel voucher or one of 19 x $500 fuel vouchers.

Tourism Emission Reduction Program
The Tourism Emissions Reduction program provides businesses with an emissions estimate and a tailored emissions reduction plan. Businesses can demonstrate their waste and emission reduction measures to visitors via a unique link and QR code.

Developed in partnership with ERC Australia, the Tourism Emissions Reduction program is a five-stage program that enables tourism businesses to develop an estimated carbon emissions report and an emissions reduction plan. Tourism businesses can access digital tools including an emissions estimator calculator and follow simple steps to develop a customised emissions reduction plan.

Nominations open for 2024 Brolga Tourism Awards

Nominations are now open for the Territory most prestigious tourism and hospitality awards the, 2024 Brolga Northern Territory Tourism Awards (Brolga Awards).

The Brolga Awards recognise Territory tourism businesses that strive for excellence in all areas of their operations, with winners in the running to win an Australian Tourism Award.

Territory based tourism operators, attractions, accommodation providers, festivals and events and industry suppliers are all encouraged to nominate their business in one of the 26 business categories.

The Brolga Awards also recognise the efforts of individuals working in the tourism industry, with individual winners celebrated for their contribution within the Territory. The awards provide value to tourism and hospitality businesses by encouraging continuous improvement.

There is a range of assistance available to aide nominees with their Brolga Award submissions.

Nominations close Wednesday, 14 August with all submissions due by 4 September 2024.

The 2024 Brolga Northern Territory Tourism Awards gala dinner will be held on Saturday, 9 November in Alice Springs.

Support Available & Conditions of Entry:
1. Maximum $1,000 (including GST) per entry in the business categories 1 to 23, 25 and 26 only. 
2. Maximum $1,500 (including GST) per business for businesses who have commenced operation 1 July 2023 – 30 June 2024 and entering category 24, ‘New Tourism Business’.
3. Businesses must enter their submission before the 04 September 2024 to be eligible for the financial support.
4.The business must be able to produce a tax invoice / receipt from their consultant for reimbursement to TTE

Fee-Free TAFE Courses
The Territory Labor Government together with the Australian Government is providing fee-free TAFE courses in 2024 to upskill Territorians and ease cost of living pressures.
Under the Fee-Free TAFE program, Territorians can study various TAFE courses for free across a number of sectors including construction, agriculture, hospitality and tourism, child care, aged care and more.
Apply between January 1 and June 30 2024 and commence your studies in 2024.

Managing invasive grasses across the Territory

The Territory Labor Government is continuing to reduce the impact of invasive grasses by investing $1 million in Budget 2024 to manage buffel and gamba grass.  

Buffel and gamba grass are highly flammable and increase the intensity and frequency of bushfires and impact the biodiversity of the natural environment.

Digital IDs set to become available for Territorians

The Lawler Labor Government is making it more convenient for Territorians to show their ID by establishing digital identification cards that can be stored on a smartphone.

Budget 2024 invests $20.66 million to bring digital driver’s licences to Territorians, with a digital driver’s licence to be a nationally recognised, trusted option for Territorians looking to put the wallet away.

Supercars to Hit Darwin Streets in an Australian First
In an Australian first, Supercars fans will get to witness the full fleet of their favourite race cars cruise the streets of Darwin before they hit the Hidden Valley Raceway.

This brand new event, Track to Town, will see race cars head into Darwin city, park up at Darwin Esplanade before driving these high-powered vehicles back to Hidden Valley. While at The Esplanade the drivers will also do a signing session for fans.

Investing in the future of TIO Stadium to attract more international sport
The Territory Labor Government is investing in infrastructure which will help the NT secure international cricket matches at TIO Stadium and improve spectator experiences.

The close to $1 million investment includes the construction of a $280,000 nursery to curate drop-in cricket pitches at TIO Stadium. The construction of the drop-in pitch nursery is another step towards international cricket matches returning to the NT for the first time in over a decade.

The Territory Labor Government is continuing to reduce single use plastics with a trial underway for cafes to offer reusable coffee cups to their customers.

Campaign begins to attract more workers from the UK and Ireland

Northern Territory industry representatives are in the UK and Ireland this month to promote working opportunities in the Territory. 

Territory employers are encouraged to log their jobs on WorkerConnect now so their vacancies can be discovered by jobseekers in the United Kingdom and Ireland.a

Strengthening Territory Liquor Laws

The Lawler Labor Government is cracking down on alcohol related anti-social behaviour.

The Liquor Legislation Amendment Bill 2024 passed in the Northern Territory Legislative assembly.

This bill increases the punishment for those who refuse to leave a licensed premises when asked from $176 to $880.

Lyons Cottage, Darwin.
The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOIs) from parties to operate from the historic Lyons Cottage on the Esplanade in Darwin’s CBD.
This is a significant opportunity for a dynamic business or organisation to operate from an extensively refurbished site offering the following:
• Licence to exclusively operate from a unique heritage-listed building.
• Full accessibility and new air-conditioning throughout.
• Convenient Darwin CBD location.
• Establish a new iconic brand or leverage your existing brand equity.
All parties wishing to submit an EOI must inspect the property which will be open 9.00 – 10.30am, Friday 31 May and Tuesday 4 June 2024.
